Two presentations at WordCamp Las Vegas stressed the importance of clarity and etiquette in publishing within the new media platforms.  Dave Talyor demonstrated, with more than a little bit of humor, the ease with which it is to search for the use of inappropriate language and, perhaps even more importantly, outrageous ideas or scandalous claims.  He brought his point home with image of graffiti from Pompeii, where ladies of a bordello made it clear they supported a specific candidate for office.

Liz Strauss was able to bring this idea into greater focus when she presented on the fact that all social media activity needs to be made with a tri-dimensional audience in mind.  Liz noted the first layer of audience audience are those we having conversations with.  The second layer are all the folks we are not aware of , the eavesdroppers.  Third, there are the future participants, who will access the content through search later on.  Liz then shared an interesting strategy insight: the sense that your future self will also be part of that audience.  The question to ask while generating content is how will this resonate with you in the future?

These are important concepts not just for our business activities, but I think we have a moral obligation to add these insights into a cultural curriculum for students engaged in on-line activity.
