One of the main challenges in each of our lives is our ability to adapt to change. If we think of the greatest stresses in life (death, divorce, illness, job loss, moving, etc.) our inclination is often to use avoidance as a coping mechanism.
For troubled teens, these challenges associated with change can be overwhelming. Experience has taught us that facing these fears with support is absolutely necessary. The Family Foundation School will be graduating one of it’s largest classes next weekend. Much of the focus in preparation for that huge life change for our graduates has been centered around the basic tools that form the foundation of a “recovered” life.
Keep it simple.
One day at a time.
Ask for help.
Accept the thing we cannot change.
The courage to change the things we can.
Turn it over.
Our hope for each of the students that will soon to leave our care: that they will rely on these tools and the attitudes they engender as they meet the challenges that surely await them.
