Killing the Buddha

A well-known koan used in Zen practice says, “If you meet the Buddha, kill him.”  For some this might mean that we need to destroy any notion of Buddha, God, enlightenment, peace or happiness that exists outside of ourselves because these things can only be found within.

Gerti Schoen, MA, LP elaborates on this idea in a recent post, “Finding Your Higher Power.” Those of us who have difficulty making someone else’s God work for us have followed the advice of Alcoholics Anonymous and have defined God for ourselves. AA refers to our “Higher Power,” but maybe “Inner Power” is a better way to think of it.
